Community Life of the Kohar Jati

The Kohar Jati community represents a way of life deeply connected to family, tradition, and everyday work. In their villages, culture is not practiced only during festivals—it lives in daily routines, language spoken at home, shared responsibilities, and mutual support among families.

During ECPC’s community engagement, members of the Kohar Jati shared stories about how knowledge and values are passed from elders to younger generations through observation and participation. Elders spoke with pride about their traditions, while youth expressed curiosity and concern about losing cultural connections as life changes.

Women highlighted their important role in maintaining cultural practices within households, while also sharing hopes for better education and livelihood opportunities for their children.
Like many communities in the Terai, the Kohar Jati faces challenges related to education access, economic pressure, and social recognition. Despite this, there is strong resilience and a desire to move forward with dignity.
ECPC’s engagement focused on listening, respect, and dialogue—recognizing that meaningful change begins by valuing community voices and identity. Preserving culture and supporting education and livelihoods go hand in hand.
This reflection is based on ECPC’s field interactions with members of the Kohar Jati community.
